Witches celebrate their guest appearance as item girls in the song Mehangai Daayan

Auspicious day for Aamir Khan and
the witches

The Indian witch (daayan) community is celebrating their first appearance in mainstream cinema with a nationwide party on Friday the 13th August. They have decided to have a feast to show their enthusiasm after some witches made guest appearance as item girls in the song Mehangai Daayan of new feature film Peepli [Live], released today. Previously, the witch community had been constrained to television via India TV, and thus, the upgradation to the big screen is an achievement.

NTMN caught up with witch Sheila Mehangai Dixit on her way to a nearby Haryana village to participate in the feast. Dixit is a witch from Delhi who is an item girl in the song. In the song, Dixit’s role is to seduce humans sweetly, and then leave them in disarray. “It is a matter of pride that my activities to promote mehangai are now receiving recognition. I hope I will continue to justify this role in future as well.”

“Friday the 13th is a lucky day for us witches. It is great that the film was released today. I was invited by the Haryana Chudail Parishad to appear in their celebratory event as Chief Guest. Since rains may close down all roads to Haryana any time, I set off early for the party. Anyway, I am not good with deadlines, so the sooner the better,” said Dixit, before moving on hurriedly.

Devi yaa chudail?

The song has got a good response already. It showcases the best of Indian witches through a song sung by Raghubir Yadav. As witches like Sheila and Maya Murti-wati do their role, the lead witch, Sonia Master Gandhi is seen whipping a man in a blue turban (portrayed as a horse running across the sets) all through the song. Sonia is shown as a leader unaffected by the problems, and keeps marching on her horse, and the horse creates records, beating one horse after another. Film critics have praised the movie team to have cast such a perfect group of item girls and item horse for the song.

Maya Murti-wati, the Lucknow witch (who is seen in the song, demolishing village houses and using their bricks to make her statues) recently decided to perform this role in real life once again, in the Friday the 13th party. She has thanked film producer Aamir Khan on behalf of the whole witch-kind.

In an unrelated event, India TV has sued Aamir Khan’s production company over copyright issues. It has accused the movie for using its trademark words “Live” and “Daayan“.
